Cha’nel Kaa-Luke

Cha’nel Kaa-Luke is a Turi Māori wahine who grew up in Deaf Education and has now come full circle towards working in the organisation. Their work of Kaitakawaenga Turi Māori encompasses the dual identity development of being both Māori and Deaf, both in the community and education settings. This mahi allows students the opportunity to explore their identity, culture and language which will help them in furthering their education or finding employment in all the places that they could represent. Cha’nel has a big passion and motivation for making spaces more accessible in the arts, community, workplaces, and Te Ao Māori.

Session Description:

Addressing Inequities in Education: Māori Deaf Learners

Māori Deaf learners face multiple inequities in education due to complex factors regarding language, culture, and identity. They tend to be marginalised within the Deaf, Hearing, Māori, and Pākehā worlds where they are often expected to walk in the majority shoes.  

In order to navigate between all of the above worlds access needs to be enabled. This will ensure our learners succeed in their local and national settings and have a presence on the global stage.  

In this presentation we will discuss barriers Māori Deaf learners face in different education settings. This will include locations such as deaf provisions within mainstream schools, outreach services and kura kaupapa Māori environments. From personal experience, I will highlight ways in which I was able to surmount these barriers and ultimately feel empowered. I will allude to current experiences faced by our learners and hope to provide some strategies of mitigating these limitations.  

This presentation will provide an insight into possible pathways to navigate the complexities our rangatahi Māori Deaf face in their education journey. I hope this presentation instigates kōrero in order to lift equitable opportunities so all of our learners can be a proponent of their own pathways of success.
